Lithium is a raw material of strategic relevance for several industries, especially the automotive sector. As of today, no battery electric vehicle can do without it. That makes it a crucial commodity for the electrification of mobility and an important building block in the energy transition. Lithium extraction can generate economic opportunities in producing countries. But it also causes social and environmental impacts that may have adverse effects on the lives of people and violate their human rights. That is why members of the Sector Dialogue Automotive Industry advocate for the implementation of preventive and remedial measures to ensure respect for human rights in lithium extraction. Based on international standards and with the involvement of external stakeholders, representatives from business, civil society and politics have developed joint expectations for lithium mining and automotive companies.
