Parliamentary State Secretary Anette Kramme travelled to Canberra, Sydney, and Melbourne at the request of the Minister at the beginning of February this year. The aim of her visit was to explore opportunities to enhance cooperation between Germany and Australia.
The visit focused on the digital transformation and greening of the labour markets, on the social partners and on ensuring the supply of skilled labour. Structural change and demographic trends bring similar challenges for both countries, particularly in the area of securing skilled workers.
Anette Kramme and Minister for Immigration, Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs Andrew Giles discussed the requirements for a successful immigration policy. A work plan was agreed with Minister for Skills and Training Brendan O'Connor concerning cooperation on the topics of digital transformation and the green transition, bolstering the system of social partnership and recognition of foreign professional qualifications.
On the trip further important talks were held with Michele O'Neil, president of the Australian Council of Trade Unions; Tania Lawrence, the chair of the Australian-German parliamentary friendship group; and representatives from the Ministry for Regional Development and for Skills and Technical and Further Education in the Victorian State Parliament. The programme was rounded off by visits to a derelict coal mine, a vocational training centre and various exchanges with representatives of civil society, giving Anette Kramme insight into the current situation in Australia.
