Christian Brecht

After 21 years as an industrial mechanic: Christian Brecht makes a fresh start

Thanks to the EGF, I found new career prospects after the plant closure at Goodyear Dunlop.

With the closure of the Goodyear Dunlop tyre plant in Philippsburg, I was threatened with unemployment, Christian Brecht recounts. After 21 years of working as an industrial mechanic at the company, I had to reorient myself.

The challenge: None of my numerous applications led to the desired success. During this time, Christian Brecht received support in personal discussions with his advisor from the transfer company weitblick - personalpartner, which was able to provide intensive support to those made redundant thanks to the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF).

With the help of the financial support from the EGF, a job fair was organised for the colleagues affected by the plant closure. The company Kraftanlagen Heidelberg presented itself there. Christian Brecht was curious: In a conversation with staff from the human resources department, I became aware of an interesting job offer: the company was looking for radiation protection workers for the dismantling of the Philippsburg power plant. I could well imagine a professional future in this field.

What was still missing for me to be hired was the necessary training in the field. No problem with the EGF! My advisor from the transfer company pointed out to me that the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund could finance the qualification. The company Kraftanlagen Heidelberg assured me of a job if I successfully completed it.

After a preparatory course in mathematics and physics, Christian Brecht began his training as a radiation protection worker at the IHK in September 2018. After extensive theory lessons and an internship, I successfully completed my training in November 2018. On 1 January 2019, I received my employment contract at Kraftanlagen Heidelberg, he proudly reports. Today, I work as a radiation protection worker at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. Thanks to the efforts of weitblick - personalpartner and the financial support from the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF), I have found a new career perspective after the Goodyear Dunlop plant closure.
