Today’s labour market figures fill me with confidence. They show that the employment situation in Germany remains robust. A look back at 2013 as a whole reveals a slight rise in employment, but also in unemployment. We must therefore look to ensure that people who have been out of work for a long time are given new opportunities to find jobs. We will focus especially on those unemployed persons who are having particular difficulty finding a job, either due to their lack of educational qualifications and training or as a result of having been without work for many years. We should use the healthy economic situation in order to help people out of long-term unemployment. This also includes guaranteeing a sufficient degree of skilled labour for Germany. In this way we aim to make sure that the economy and social security remain stable and robust in future. Social cohesion and prosperity in our country need once again to not only grow broadly but also be sustainable.
