Germany and Spain agree on close cooperation

For youth employment and vocational mobility

Young people are among the hardest hit by the economic and financial crisis in Europe: Youth unemployment in Spain is currently running at 56 percent. Against this alarming background, Federal Labour Minister Dr. Ursula von der Leyen signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Madrid on 21 May 2013, together with Spanish Employment Minister Fátima Báñez García. In this Memorandum, the Spanish and German Labour Ministries agreed to work together more closely in future, particularly with a view to enhancing youth employment.

This German-Spanish Memorandum of Understanding aiming to step up bilateral cooperation in the field of labour market policy stresses the importance of joint efforts to strengthen the labour markets and to promote the employment of young people. Spain and Germany would like to make a joint effort in future to increase vocational mobility. Cooperation is furthermore to concentrate on intensifying the exchange of experience between Spain and Germany on questions related to vocational orientation, job placement and promotional labour market policy measures. Furthermore, cooperation is to be stepped up within the European Employment Strategy, and the Social Dialogue is to be promoted
