Social security ensures a society that offers good living conditions, a society in which everyone can take part in societal and political developments and its members stand by one another.
Social security and social action are hallmarks of our social state. Combating poverty and social exclusion rank among the top priorities of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs (BMAS) and pose a constant task for society.
Social security means assisting individuals who find themselves in a state of need which they are no longer able to remedy on their own. Social security additionally aims to avert such situations - be they the result of illness, an accident, the need for long-term care, unemployment or old age.
Social security for the individual is organised in the various branches of Germany's solidarity-based social insurance system: in pension insurance, health insurance, long-term care insurance and accident insurance. Artists' social insurance is specifically for self-employed artists and journalists. The Mini-Job-Zentrale agency is responsible for social-insurance-related matters in connection with marginal part-time employment.
